As tomorrow celebrates the majestic king of the Arctic with International Polar Bear Day, I’ve reached for the archives for this week’s Travel Photo.
I’d just returned to our expedition ship in 2013 after a fantastic zodiac cruise through crackling ice and blue skies. This polar bear seemingly appeared from nowhere, a spot in the distance that grew larger as he approached us to satisfy his curiosity. He stopped within metres of the ship before slowly swimming alongside it, looking up at us. It felt like he was looking each one of us in the eye with a silent “welcome to my land and remember I am in charge”. A truly magnificent creature facing a challenging and uncertain future.
